The Psychology of Depression and Anxiety - Dr. Scott Eilers

There are people who understand depression and anxiety on a personal level and there are people who understand depression and anxiety on a medical level. There are relatively few people who understand both, and I’m one of them. As a clinical psychologist I have a doctorate degree and thousands of hours of professional experience providing treatment for mood and anxiety disorders. I also have 39 years of personal experience managing mood and anxiety disorders as I myself deal with these struggles. This podcast is my attempt to synthesize my personal knowledge with my professional knowledge.

    Wealth of Knowledge
As a licensed clinical social worker, I can tell you this podcast is a true GEM! A ton of little nuggets of truth, information and knowledge. This guy knows what he’s talking about! What I like most about his podcast is that he is down to earth and he is genuine. For me, as a busy professional who doesn’t have 2 hours to listen to a podcast sometimes, he gives you the information direct without lots of fillers. I’m telling you… You want a podcast other professionals listen to!!!

    Truth Knowledge Experience and Competence
I’ve only listened to two short episodes and yet I know enough to write that title and I know I want to hear more. I loved the format of the three questions to ask your therapist and the six types of people that are loosing their battle with depression. A discussion doesn’t have to be long and complicated to be helpful and impactful, it just has to be true and enlightening and portable. I’m hooked. Thank you Scott.

    Life Changing
Yo be totally honest with you man, I’ve been seeing your YouTube videos pop up for a nearly a year now but I would always neglect to click on them because of how well groomed your beard and hair are.😅 I would assume that no one who takes that much care of their appearance could be deep, understanding, compassionate or empathetic. I thought you were trying to come off as sigma male or something that’s all about defeating the opposition, victory, power, stoicism and assertiveness, toxic things that those in my immediate, seemingly inescapable circle seem to be obsessed with and worship to the degree of being labeled narcissistic psychopaths. But I remember clicking on one video a year ago for some reason, (likely the title) and it floored every other psych vid I’ve ever seen. That’s feels like an over exaggeration, but I logically don’t think it is. I still remember the thoughts I had while watching despite forgetting the title. Don’t take this the wrong way, but the way you empathize and really get to the bottom of the hole, literally echoing many of my own thoughts, (and hopefully others) gives the impression of you being someone that DOESNT look like you.🤣I’m aware my own “backstory” is the cause of that extreme view of a well kept beard and hair after listening to some episodes in this podcast though. Having some understanding about myself is really helping me focus on the right problems with my therapist and is preventing me from minimizing everything and not talking about those issues with him. I greatly appreciate what you’re doing. Please keep releasing more episodes! And I probably actually am gonna buy your book.

    Mental Health You Can Understand
I just went back and listened to the episode on 2/5/23. Recently, in the past couple of months I have been told by my therapist that she just doesn’t know what else there is to try, that we’ve tried just about everything. The moment she said that, nothing else she said even remotely connected with me. It killed me. It still does kill me inside thinking about it. Listening to this podcast and specifically the episode on 2/6/23 I think is a huge turning point for me. There is hope. I haven’t tried everything. Today I just changed therapist and will see how it goes. Thank you Dr. Scott

    Great pod, too many ads
I love the podcast but I find it really annoying that In a 15 min podcast you have 4-6 ad breaks. It makes it hard to stay in it and focused. I think a longer ad break less frequently would be a better solution. That is just my opinion, might be the only one but thought I would share.

Very sincere, helpful, practical and insightful
Such a good series with very clear applicable wisdom and techniques. No clickbait, no courses/ classes/ trainings or other expensive upper level content being pushed. This is the kind of podcast you wish other psychology podcasts were like, but it definitely speaks to a specific type of person and isn’t trying to be a general audience podcast , which is why it is so helpful to the people who click with it.

My personal feeling about what you described is you are experiencing a combination of depression with anhedonia and a form of DPDR. Thanks for your sharing and being vulnerable!

    My favorite podcast
This podcast has seriously saved my mental health these past few weeks! It’s been a heavy season of life and I needed to hear these words. Dr. Scott has a way of explaining things that make sense and you can tell he actually gets it. He’s been through it, and I can tell he genuinely wants to help people feel better. He has a gift.

    We can ask questions!?
Scott, thank you so much for continuing to produce content that is so informative and validating. You have given me a deep perspective on the type of therapy I and many of us need. I’m encouraged by your passion to do the right thing the right way. Also, we can ask our therapist personal questions!? That feels so taboo! 😳 I am not sure why I feel that way, but man that is a refreshing thought. Thank you! Keep up the good work.

    Very helpful
For some reason hearing Dr Scott talking about what it’s like living with the pain of depression without sugar coating as someone who has experienced it is a rare validation and extremely helpful.

    So Informative !
I am so glad to have discovered this podcast. You speak so calmly and clearly. I appreciate that you go into such detail with the best intention and personally I’ve never experienced in my few brief times being with a psychiatrist and even therapist such knowledge you share and the proper terms given to things, Especially anhedonia you’ve completely taught me that along with many other terms ,but that one hits personal for me. Thank you so much for your work , time, and energy into sharing your knowledge.

    Loving every bit of this!
From his voice, his content, the friendly/real-world approach, his own experience, it’s all so good that I can’t really put into words. I’m new to podcasts n struggled to find something that clicked with me. So far, this is the only podcast I listened to every episode of. Every episode has great insight n positivity, so even when I’m not interested in a particular topic, I still listen to it and always find something helpful. I think this podcast is for anyone interested in learning about mental health.

    Amazing podcast!
One of the few that can break down depression and anxiety in a way that anyone can understand. I not only apply it my clients but to myself as well. I would love a daily episode. Once a week is not enough hehe!! Keep them coming!

One of the best podcasts I’ve ever heard
Dr. Scott Eilers, I’ve only listened to one of your episodes so far but everything you said in the last fifty minutes really hit home. You explained depression, the symptoms of depression, treatment plans for depression, etc. in a easy way for me to understand and resonate with your words. Thank you for being so personable and informative. I will definitely keep listening to your podcast. 10/10 Highly recommended listening to this podcast!

Please keep up the good work. I am a very seasoned bipolar person who still needs to hear this stuff over and over again. I especially appreciate your attention to detail and your own experience with certain feelings. I love your attitude, and the fact that you seem to truly enjoy what you do. We really need people like you.
