Liar, Liar: Melissa Caddick and the Missing Millions

50

Since late 2020, the case of missing Sydney woman Melissa Caddick has captivated the country. A seemingly successful businesswoman from Sydney's eastern suburbs went missing after authorities raided her Dover Heights home amid questions over an unlicensed financial planning business.
Sydney Morning Herald investigative journalist Kate McClymont would reveal key details of a massive Ponzi scheme and a $23 million fraud that ripped off investors including her family and friends as Caddick lived the high life of overseas trips, cars and high end fashion. McClymont's coverage would win her a ninth Walkley Award.
Now McClymont and 60 Minutes’ Tom Steinfort are set to present a breakthrough podcast Liar, Liar: Melissa Caddick and the Missing Millions that will follow the twists and turns of a case where everyone has a theory of their own. What happened to the money and what happened to Melissa? Liar Liar will reveal fresh details of the crime of the century through interviews with key players and takes listeners from upmarket jewellery auction rooms in Hong Kong, to the ski slopes of Aspen to private islands in the South Pacific.

    Hosts are….
Hosts are painful, they’re somehow bough arrogant and incompetent. Quote from first episode talking speculated location of fraudster: …”hiding out in a hidden room, Anne Frank style” 🤦🏻‍♀️ Can’t believe that I have to say this but… except Anne Frank was a child and (critically) not a criminal.

    Just read the Wikipedia article
Fascinating story made impossibly boring through terrible storytelling and even worse sound editing.

    Terrible
I couldn’t even get through the second episode. Painful. What kind of “journalist” uses words like “psychopathic” so flippantly? Are either of these fools psychologists? They’re not even journalists or writers worth being called that, so I’m guessing not. There has to be room in this story for some kind of nuance, but not with these hosts. Just. Terrible. Completely terrible.

    Interesting Story with Knowledgeable Reporters
This series has been the latest that I’ve listened to whilst working from home. I had never heard this story before as I’m in the states so I was surprised to hear the outcomes. By the end of it I absolutely could not take any more of Anthony’s nonsense or horrid music. In a case such as this I would assume foul play but this seems like the rare circumstance where he doesn’t seem to be a suspect. What I am left wondering though is how there wasn’t more scrutiny over his knowledge of Melissa’s business practices. There’s no way I believe he thought her income was legitimate all these years. In similar cases that I’ve seen in the U.S., spouses have faced criminal charges for aiding or abetting.

    Interesting Story
The story is interesting enough to hold my attention but like many others I thought the storytelling was hard at times to listen to. I actually was ok with the male host, but the female host I could not get past… annoying voice and commentary. Melissa should have used some of that money for plastic surgery… 🫣🤐😬

    Could have been amazing
I was super excited to dig into this unbelievable story… but I just can not get past the story telling. Only made it through a few episodes and had to turn it off. I’m hoping this is another podcast telling this story for me to listen to.

    Disappointing and very poorly made
This podcast is truly disappointing, especially coming from two esteemed journalists. Normally, I greatly appreciate it when it is the investigative journalists who report a true crime story. But this is not it. The hosts’ mocking tone and their sensationalization of the details really undermine their credentials and professionalism. Where is the journalistic integrity? They spend so much time trying to be funny and cute. But it’s clearly (and poorly) scripted, sometimes outright offensive, and terribly delivered. So much foreshadowing. There is multiple “but we will get to that later”s every episode. Then talk about it when you get to it? These mentions are totally unnecessary for the point they are trying to make at that time too. Also, what is the point of going through a list of expensive purchases repeatedly with the price tag and brand name every single time? There is at least one time in every episode where they list a bunch of expensive stuff while making snarky comments. And not in passing either. They take their time. At one point, they go through every clothing item and accessory in pictures she is in. For minutes. We get it she spent an exorbitant amount of money on luxury items and probably had a problem. Move on. Do the reporting.

Story is fascinating but the hosts are terrible.
A few days ago, I read in the news where Melissa Caddick had officially and finally been declared dead. Despite having a great interest in true crime, I hadn’t ever heard of her so I did a search for podcasts about the case and came across this one. While the story is quite interesting, I found myself not being able to get past the narcissistic hosts and their ridiculous and overly excessive banter. They love to hear themselves talk and someone should have let them know that the podcast isn’t about THEM. While they’re both truly awful, the female in the duo was definitely the worst of the two. The back and forth and their “tone” is probably better suited for hosting a cooking or travel show or tabloid fodder instead of covering the plight of Melissa Caddick’s many victims who, by her action, have been completely and utterly destroyed, both emotionally and financially. There were so many times that I thought I wasn’t going to be able to stomach the mindless blather long enough to make it through all of the episodes. Whoever made the decision to choose these two to host something like this might want to consider a new occupation because you really made a bad call with this one. Lastly, I don’t care about the hosts qualifications, awards or resume. I’ve listened to hundreds of other podcasts whose narrators probably don’t have any of the same accolades but they do a wonderful job, mainly because they don’t try to make things all about themselves. I looked at the podcast page and saw where there are other (later) stories and episodes of “Liar, Liar” but as long as these two are narrating, I just can’t do it, regardless of what it’s about.

    Fascinating story but…
This is the first time I’ve ever been moved to write a review in 10 years. That should say something. The story itself is fascinating and heartbreaking all the way around. But the way the hosts so callously gossip and behave like petty, mean spirited children is pretty gross. Making jokes about “hiding away Anne Frank style” was appalling. It was the audible journalism version of the tackiest, most audacious tabloid you can imagine. Do better.

    A big meh
It’s a fascinating story. But it’s just barely reported. In the opening few minutes, the hosts tout their credentials, which I should have taken as a tip off. Good journalism doesn’t start with braggadocio. This is a very tabloid-like and pretty shallow take on the events.

    Wow!
Omg the family is ridiculous! Come on she caused alll if her own problems- making excuses doesn’t help anyone!

    Ugh
You lost me at blatant Holocaust Denial. That’s right, trivializing the Holocaust IS Holocaust Denial. Normalizing it on a podcast listened by tens to hundreds of thousands of people all over the world — is straight-up dangerous. Yet no apology, no re-edit, no attempt to address it. This is not journalism, and super triggering for true crime listeners, who, incase you’re not paying attention, are drawn to true crime because they’ve experienced trauma and/or loss. How does this pod have advertisers willing to make money off of this. And true reporting, always, puts the victims first.

    Hosts detract
The hosts, esteemed and intelligent though they are, are not the right storytellers for this content. A few episodes in, I’m tuning them out. Both because they’re not adding value with their commentary, which I don’t understand how that is even possible, and because their cadence is waaay to casual and … gossipy? It’s largely meaningless banter between two people who seem to have less interest in and less knowledge of the psychological forces behind this story than your average true crime listener. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t even bring up the foot- and if they do, they’ll just titter about it a little bit, while offering *no* insight OR sharing ANY theories on it. The episode about her personal life offered less personal insight into Melissa’s life than all the other episodes. And if the hosts actually interviews her victims, why do I feel I know less about the whole situation than I did before? Also, the Anne Frank comment was totally inappropriate- yikes.

    check your antisemitism
I’m sure you thought that saying ‘Hiding Anne Frank-style’ would be illustrative for your listeners, but in actuality, comparing the projected ordeal of an adult criminal to the real trauma of a persecuted and murdered Jewish child is simply careless antisemitism. Think before you speak.
  • bg1/3
    no direction to story
each episode recounts the same thing over and over without building to anything- the amount of times they said the full names of experts was maddening- did not deep dive into if she’s actually dead/runaway- poorly done with what could have been a good story
  • or maybe not
    Very Good But Questions Remain
All ten episodes are well done and worth a listen. If there are any updates, I’d like to hear about potential accomplices for two reasons. First, it is no small thing to create fake trading records sent to victims each month and audited each year. Second, if Melissa did die at the hands of another, a desire to silence her is a better motive than most.

    Compelling story
A true psychopath who takes advantage of everyone in her periphery. However, the podcasters are so snarky and biased that it’s hard to know if what they’re saying is part of the case or hyperbole. It has the (most likely) unintended side effect of making the listener wonder if she is getting a smear job. The outrageous twists and turns of this case seem to make this style of storytelling unnecessary. Let us make our own determination based on the facts and merits of the case without telling us her next move is the worst!

    Fascinating case
    Enjoying the podcast!

    Annoying background music drowns dialogue...
I just want to hear the story, I do not want to hear an overly produced podcast. If they feel dramatic music is warranted then do it between 'chapters'.

Fascinating- had to listen to every episode!
Story about a female Madoff well told with bits of forensic psychiatry insight. Should be a TV broadcast. Be careful who you trust - sociopath in Gucci clothing

    Frauds on parade
If you covered the Trump campaign, then you covered one of the greatest American fraudsters.
  • radiounited
    Not great.
I have never in my life heard podcast hosts go on about their accomplishments and awards as much as these two. Start stop editing, the entire story being revealed in the set up and these two listing their merit badges makes it a pretty annoying, anticlimactic listen.

    Five stars
Fascinating story very well presented. Highly recommend.

    Good podcast!
I am familiar with the story and find it fascinating. But I wish you would release all the episodes for those of us who like to binge watch!

    Australia, man
Y’all still a nation of criminals, just like all your ancestors, eh? Seems like all you hear about these days are Aussie fraudsters (this chick, Hamish Watson/McLauren, etc). Really hope Aussies can break free of their ancestral shame (for their ancestors coming to Australia as felons) and start living more honestly. There’s no need to do all this fraud stuff when y’all could be surfing and wrestling crocodiles.
