    Okay
Decent storytelling but the narrator says “like” every couple of words. Couldn’t keep listening.

I especially enjoyed the episode about Adelaide💕 “Despair is not an option. Keep working, and this work matters!” 💕

    The Direct Approach History Needs
As a historian I’m picky about which history podcasts I listen to. They have to be accurate but still entertaining. Ann manages to do both superbly well. If you like drunk history, sarcasm, and problematic faves then I promise you won’t be disappointed!

    Likes and ramblings
I like the idea of a casual history podcast. The Catherine de Medici part one was unlistenable. The amount of likes and ramblings made no sense. I don’t even mind the word like-I use it a lot but it was used as a placeholder because she didn’t know what she was saying next. 45 minutes in and they got to her birth. I thought it might be a rough draft they put out by accident.

    Unlistenable
Land the plane! Land the plane! If the host would do research before recording, stay on topic, and include less filler (you don’t need to say CI-TAY or use the adjective “hot” over and over again. I really wanted to like this podcast, but I want the meat, not the bones.

    Poor Research
This isn’t for anyone who takes History seriously.

    Love her voice!
Like laughing with a friend but you learn stuff at the same time. None of the pretension that so many “serious” historians have. Also, Ann uses the exact correct number of times saying “like” when she talks, every time. Perfect, 5 stars, highly recommend.

    Love it so much
I love this podcast with my entire soul. It’s so hilarious and and makes me feel like I too am a historian. I wait for every episode and I am never disappointed.

    Obsessed!
This is my new favorite podcast. So engaging, interesting, funny. I am glad there are so many to catch up on since I am obsessed! I can’t stop listening.

Not as progressive as they think they are.
I enjoy the most of the content, although it was up until recent seasons, predominantly Western European-focused. As a person of color, it does truly annoy me that the host thinks they are progressive when they only call out the United States and the United Kingdom, and not their homeland of Canada, or the many other countries were people of color and other marginalized groups have suffered and continue to suffer today. This is the typical white feminist comedy and favoritism that only pics and choose which oppressors to call out and protecting those that they like. That made me back off and listening to the show. First, it was a very non-diverse content, which the host did remedy, at least for a bit, but the pseudo progressive that the host tries to portray themselves as is insulting, when people of color are still being mistreated in her homeland of Canada, and in many other places around the world.

    Stellar women’s history!!
I love this podcast and my only negative is it took me so long to find it! It’s informative witty and just overall so engaging! Thank you Ann for this amazing podcast!

    Iconic women’s history podcast
I can’t believe I just only discovered Vulgar History this year. It ticks so many of my boxes. Feminist. Women’s history. Comedy. Yes, all of the above, please! The research is top-notch. The stories are riveting. I love this show!

    Refreshing viewpoint
Entertaining and eye-opening to hear about history through women

    My favorite after dinner treat
I started listening a few weeks ago and have come to absolutely love this podcast. I want to be best friends with the host. Her style is less academic and more “let me tell my friends juicy scandals from history” and I am so here for it. I especially appreciate her love of fashion and boredom with recaps of battles. If you like women’s history and have a sense of humor this is the podcast for you.

    Fantastic
Ann is an awesome storyteller. I feel like I’m hearing an interesting story from a friend, not something boring in class. I’m so glad I found this podcast. Not only does she say like the appropriate number of times, she could even say that more. Thank you for this amazingness!

Where's your god now John Knox
This podcast is amazing. Historical women such as Queen Mary, Catherine De Medici, Aethelflead, etc, are my favorite thing to learn about (Mary the most- Long May She Reign!) Pretty sure the episodes are just the running conversation in my mind at all times (I love the nicknames bc I do the same thing) I look forward to the weekly episodes, and looooove the merch. 10/10 recommend you listen and recommend to anyone else interested in history!

    Preference for earlier seasons
As a fan of the early seasons, I was really excited to hear Ann’s spin and unique take on Mary, Queen of Scots. I’m a fan of the podcast in its previous incarnations where it’s Ann, Hepburn, and maybe a special episode with a guest every now and again. The most recent season has been insufferable due to the presence of Lana Wood Johnson and Allison Epstein. By all means, keep them on the Patreon for people who enjoy their input, but please spare the rest of us. Their “expertise” on the subject matter brought nothing remarkable to the podcast and has truly turned me off to future episodes. Skip the whole Mary season, especially if you were excited about the potential for it. It has not been met and is not up to the standards Ann had set for Vulgar History.

    Amazing podcast!!!
I absolutely love this show!! It is equally funny and fascinating! It feels like your listening to your best friend tell you all the juicy gossip over coffee.

    Not for me
I REALLY REALLY wanted to like this show topic is very on brand for me. But the hosts voice is very timid and she seems to talk in run on sentences; always adding in other ‘tidbits’ but in odd places. If you can get over that it’s probably ok. But I couldn’t focus on what she was saying at all.
  • atinylittlemouse
    One of my favorites!
I’ve learned so much from this show. The conversational tone makes it so easy to listen to. Used the word “like” the perfect amount of times for people who aren’t misogynists. ❤️

    Fav show
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PODCAST! I’ve always been a history buff and love historical fiction and Ann makes it so fun to listen to and makes me want to dig deeper into areas I wouldn’t have previously been interested. I just recently found this podcast but have been binging for episode 1 and love every second of it.

    Love this podcast!
Love the podcast and the format is relaxed but well researched. I also absolutely love how much you she loves the show Reign! I am obsessed with the show and the costumes, so sad it was removed from Netflix. Definitely would recommend this podcast.

    Great podcast + Misophonia Trigger
I think the podcast is well-done in terms of research and explanation. It’s not a dry lecture; it’s very casual. Lots of side rants, which I personally enjoy. It makes history very accessible. I listen to tons of history podcasts and I am currently researching legal historical women’s issues, so I am particularly interested in the content. Anyone who criticizes the research or presentation style is just sexist. But, I am so upset because I have that horrible thing where the sounds of chewing/smacking make me want to kick a baby so I can’t keep listening. I would still read the transcripts but I can’t find them. I am only putting this review in case there is some way to dampen mouth sounds, because I would very much appreciate it. And also because I like the podcast.

Love this podcast! (But not Lana Wood Johnson)
Vulgar History is one of my favorite podcasts to listen to! It’s funny and light but also really informative. I love Ann’s way of speaking and story-telling because it feels like you’re listening to a friend. The one thing I’ll say is that Lana Wood Johnson is a reoccurring guest and she bothers me SO much. I can barely listen to the episodes with her. I find her to be an over-compensating know-it-all and she’s really distracting and infuriating to me. I hate to leave negativity out there but the podcast is so much better without her.
  • Ozymandias1
    Rambling and unscholarly
I can take irreverent. I like irreverent, that’s why I tried a podcast titled “Vulgar History”. But these episodes are rambling, poorly researched, and mostly uninformative. Don’t waste your time.

    Love!
I have so much overlap in taste with the host in historic eras and also media about history! For example, I feel like every time I read a new historical fiction book that blows me out of the water, Ann interviews the author - and I’ve also found out about books that are perfect for me this way! It’s just a very fun way to hear about history, like having a conversation with a knowledgeable friend. And it’s made me think about historical figures from different perspectives!

    Love it
I’m a history buff and this is such a fun way to hear about these people. Love her take on things.

    All 10’s and yes’s
10/10. All the stars. The podcast covers a great variety of women in such a such an easy listening yet captivating way. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you always come back for more. Ann does a great job not swaying you to love or dislike the women she talks about while covering all the things the women did/had happen throughout their lives. Ann is, like, the best!

    I really LIKE this podcast!
Vulgar History is phenomenal. It is funny and informative. The stories are amazing and I love hearing all the social details I never got in history classes. I often share this show as an example of a show that only has one host and (usually) no guests, but still manages to be conversational and charismatic. And as a fellow lady podcaster who also says like a lot, I greatly appreciate Ann’s dedication to like… not changing her speech patterns based off of reviews and just embracing it. 100/5 stars
  • MichelleJennings
    Fun yet engaging!
Easily LIKE one of my favorite podcast! She isn’t monotone and boring like most history podcast. I feel like I’m having a gossipy chat with a girlfriend about my favorite historic people! Also just signed up to her patreon, I’m willing to pay to hear more of this woman!!
  • tri_sarahtops
    Informative and Entertaining
I have been binging episodes like pringles since i came across this podcast. My favorite thing about our host is that she says “like” an appropriate amount of times. 😉

    Entertaining education!
I’ve been listening to this podcast for about a year now and although I had originally thought it would be a history of swear words what I got was much better! The conversational style of telling history is much more engaging than the monotone, seemingly-bored-to-tears history podcasts I’ve tried in the past. I appreciate all the different nationalities that have been represented in this podcast as of late, especially since I’ve only been educated about white American men in my classes so far. I also really appreciate that she lists her sources and encourages listening to the podcasts she learns from. This podcast gets me through work shifts, house chores, and hard times, and I hope this show goes on for as long as possible. Vulgar History has made me more interested in history than I thought I’d ever be, so thank you for an entertaining source of education and inspiration for what career field I’m looking into. Ann & crew, thank you for putting so much into this show (this show is my coping mechanism) and I’m signing up for the Patreon very soon!

    The Best
i am in love with this podcast. i have to physically Force myself to stop listening for weeks at a time so that i have enough content to binge listen too. A wonderful and entertaining window into the lives of people i would otherwise not know about, and a beautiful starting point for new history based Special Interests. Also i will throw hands in defense of Anne and her speaking patterns, they’re soothing and like, completely reasonable and i will die on that hill.
  • oniontoothpaste
    Yay ! !
Ann delivers the stories like gossip ! It makes the information so accessible and fun.
  • LindsBurleson33
    Ann is the best!
I love love love this podcast! Ann says the word “like” an appropriate amount of times and cracks me up all while dishing the tea on juicy scandalous often spicy women in history. Great storytelling and also awesome book recommendations. Love love love!!!!

    Herstory Excellence
Got into this podcast because my SO loves history, but every podcast suggested to me has failed to hold my attention UNTIL Vulgar History; it’s entertaining, informative and has made me actively research the subjects of these episodes post listen. Modern twist on the same ol’ patriarchal history.
  • kpbs17
My favorite podcast. Like hanging out with your super smart, funny bestie.
I found this podcast during its first season totally by chance and have been addicted since. Ann knows how to pick the subjects of her episodes (like, FREDEGUND?! Excuse you rest of the history podcast world for not talking about her sooner) and her style of storytelling is so funny, engaging, and accessible. Also, to all of the jabronis who think she says like too much, SO DO I and I’m happy to finally be able to listen to someone who talks like me. You guys can, like, go listen to, like, a way less fun show if you want. I’m staying here with my girl Ann Foster.

    I loooooovvveee it!
I absolutely love this podcast! I found it in March and have been binge listening to it ever since! It seriously has been the only thing I’ve played in my car for months now. I finally caught up to the most recent episode and my heart just sank when I realized I’ll have to wait a week for the next episode. I’ve never been a huge history person (nor a podcast person), but this podcast has changed that! Ann is funny and entertaining, and provides all the extra details a non-history buff needs. Plus, the stories are so captivating, and I love all the knowledge I now have! Ps: Ann, I am really loving these multi part episodes! Edit: Ann says like an **checks notes** APPROPRIATE number of times
  • Jujiteira
    I love this podcast!
I’ve been listening to this podcast for a couple of years now, at the recommendation of my sister. I absolutely love it! I love that Ann takes historical events/people and turns them into palatable stories for the modern audience. She also says “like” an appropriate amount of times, since she speaks in the way that is common to literally everyone in the English-speaking world, which makes her content all the more digestible and able reach (and connect with) a wider audience. 5 stars all day, every day.
  • FeelinFeisty
    Unlistenable
It’s like she opened a book and is reading it out loud without any prior knowledge of the subject matter. It sounds like she’s quickly reading out loud and trying to process the information as she goes. Lots of pauses, “Ummm”s, and the cadence makes this unlistenable. I was so excited when I saw the subject matter of the episodes, and was so disappointed I wouldn’t be able to listen. There are so many well researched and well spoken podcasts out there, I recommend giving this one a hard pass.
  • kellyaboots
    So entertaining and informational!
Ann chooses such interesting women and gives great context so that you can really understand what their world was like. She says “like” an appropriate amount of times, and I find myself laughing out loud at her jokes and sarcasm.
  • MMKINDALLAS
    Love, but
    please stop saying “like.”

Truly a pleasure to listen to
I’ve learned so much from Ann and love listening to each episode. Her delivery and humor are perfect. Huge fan!

    Fantastic
Vulgar History is my favorite history podcast. Anne Foster does a splendid job of representing women throughout history. l I listen all the time during work and this podcast gets me through the long overnight hours. Fantastic job Anne! Keep cranking out the phenomenal episodes.
